YOU CAN DO THIS: Fighting the Coronavirus

I know you are scared.

I know you are frightened that you or your loved ones will die from the coronavirus.

I can tell you that I am not scared. I am not fearful that anything will happen to me, my wife or my two children. I am very worried about my older parents and my mother-in-law, and I have taken several measures to make sure they protected. Because of these measures, I am less worried than I would be otherwise.

You have been told that you should be scared. Everywhere you look, you see others panicking – so you are now panicking as well. You have been told that “there is nothing you can do,” and the only thing you can do is to wash your hands and go into hiding.

I am here to tell that you that there is more you can do. You can take steps to increase your (or your family’s) chances of beating this virus. You absolutely need to be aware of this virus, but perhaps you don’t need to be scared. We need to be responsible, practice social distancing, limit contact, and take steps to prevent the spread of this virus to our most vulnerable. There is no question about that. But being responsible, may also mean that you do everything in your power to strengthen your body from within so that you have the greatest chance of fighting and beating this virus, if and when you are exposed.

Who am I? My name is Pejman Katiraei, and I am pediatrician who has spent over a decade training to help solve the unsolvable cases. At Loma Linda University, I helped adults who had “unsolvable” conditions including, severe cases of chronic fatigue, lupus, colitis and other intense autoimmune diseases that failed medications. We gave him more steroids and other medications, except this time they did not work. We had a meeting with the smartest doctors in our hospital, and the only logical next step for them was to recommend this 12-year-old’s colon be cut out.

I said, wait – wait – can’t we try anything else? What about diet? What about supplements? They confidently said nothing would work, and so this 12-year-old had his colon cut out. In that moment I realized there had to be more than what the allopathic medical system had taught me.

In our modern world, you have been told that vaccines and medications are the only way you can be saved. Now don’t get me wrong, I know vaccines or medications have great value – I use them all the time. BUT I need you to see something – you have been told you are powerless!  You have been told that you and your body are weak and that you have no ability to fight illness.

This is simply not true! The reason why you are now panicking is because every other time, you have been told that the only way you can be protected is by getting a shot or a pill. We are now in a situation where our medical system has no fix – yet. There is no vaccine to go get. There is no medicine that will save you.

I can only imagine who terrified you are now. I, too, would be scared to death if I was in your shoes.

I want you to see how absolutely powerful your body is.

I want you to realize the miracles your immune system can pull off, if it is healthy.

And this is where statistics do not lie. All you hear on the news is the 3-4% death rate of this coronavirus which makes in 20-30 times as deadly as the regular flu. This is only one part of the picture. Based on the data from the World Health Organization and China’s CDC, 80% of all people who catch this virus have mild to moderate symptoms which are manageable.

So perhaps the first question we should ask is: “How do I make sure I and my loved ones are part of this 80%.”  You see, I am not worried about myself, my family and frankly the elders in my life, because I am making damn sure we will be part of this 80%. You may be wondering how this is possible. Well, let’s look further into the statistics to understand.

 

You already know that this virus basically leaves all children and younger adults alone. Only 2.4% of all known cases are in children under 18. So basically, children don’t “catch” this virus. Children are getting exposed FOR SURE – but they don’t even show signs of illness. There are no young children under 9 years who have died. Did you hear that? NO child has died that we know of. WHY IS THIS?

In individuals 10-19, if you do get the illness, you have a 1 in 500 chance of having a severe complication which can kill you. The story keeps getting more interesting. Most adults up to 39 years of age, also have a 1 in 500 chance of getting really ill. If you are 40-49, this risk jumps to 1 in 250.

The people who are most at risk are our elders. If you are older than 80 years of age, you have a 74 times higher risk of dying than someone much younger. As you have also heard, those with underlying health problems, have a 6-10 times higher risk of dying than those who are healthy.

What does this information tell us?

Why is one population at a dramatically higher risk of being harmed than another?

WHY DOES THIS VIRUS NOT TREAT ALL PEOPLE THE SAME WAY?

WHY IS THIS VIRUS JUST A COMMON COLD FOR ONE GROUP, AND A HORRIBLE DISASTER FOR ANOTHER GROUP?

The immune system of a host (YOU ARE THE HOST!!) controls pathogens (germs) that have invaded the host, and thereby determines the prognosis (the outcome) of patients with any infectious diseases including pneumonia.”

“Immune cells may communicate with each other through cytokine (inflammatory) networks during this process, and the hyperactive immune phenomena against an extensive amount of substances, such as an imbalance of cytokines (i.e., a cytokine storm), may be responsible for further lung injury. If a host’s immune cell clones are unable to control the PPs (pathogenic proteins) and substances from injured lung cells, ARDS may progress to death in the acute stage or cause chronic inflammatory respiratory diseases due to the continuous activation of non-specific immune cells.”

So, in English, what this article basically says is that you need an immune system that can quickly kill a virus and then chill the hell out! If your immune system can kick butt and then relax, you will likely be just fine.

Did you catch that? WHAT YOUR BODY DOES WITH THE VIRUS MATTERS MORE THAN WHAT THE VIRUS DOES TO YOU! This is also what the statistics tell us. People who have healthy immune systems are at a much lower risk of being harmed from this virus than people who are unhealthy or older. Our immune system’s health (the ability to kick butt) is CRITICAL and determines who is part of this 80% or not!

So now we need to understand why the elderly are at a higher risk of being harmed. There are many things that happen as we age.

One factor that decreases over time is our capacity to produce our master anti-oxidant (glutathione). You can consider glutathione as the master fire extinguishing system within our body. Without it, a tiny flame turns into an epic fire that can kill you. Elders have a much weaker fire extinguishing system than those who are younger.

SO WHY DOES THIS ALL MATTER?

When antioxidants (especially glutathione) are low and the insult is too great, you have a royal mess on your hands! This is exactly what the article below tells us. COVID-19 is the arsonist that is attempting to set off a forest fire in your lungs!!! If your immune system can quickly capture this arsonist, and your fire-extinguishing system can quickly put out the fire, then you will be absolutely fine!! There are ways you can boost your glutathione levels and naturally boost your body’s fire-extinguishing system. We will discuss this a little later.

Your fire-extinguishing system does more than just put out fires that viruses cause. It turns out that glutathione is also rather critical for keeping all the cells within your body healthy. Why? Because without enough glutathione, your body can’t detoxify effectively. Why does that matter?

Imagine your car. You have driven it several thousand miles and now it is time for an oil change. You decide to skip this oil change. In fact, you decide that your car never needs an oil change. So you keep driving, and the oil in your car becomes dirtier and nastier. It ultimately gets so nasty that it mucks up your engine, and then one day you come to start it and your car won’t start. You fried your engine because the oil was so dirty!

Now you can’t exactly go and take your body for an oil change. Your liver, using glutathione (and a bunch of other stuff) is constantly filtering your oil to keep it fresh. When you have enough glutathione, the oil in your body is clean and flowing perfectly keeping all the processes, especially those within your cells (immune cells included) functioning in tip-top shape. We will discuss why having your immune cells in top shape is so important in a minute.

Now, unfortunately, protecting yourself against COVID-19 is NOT just about having enough glutathione. I wish it was that simple. It is not!!!

You see, poor diet and lifestyle are like having a 1,000-pound gorilla sitting in your regular car every day for multiple years. This half-ton gorilla (poor diet and lifestyle) ultimately causes the car to break down prematurely. The engine, transmission, tires all get worn down and just don’t work nearly as well. Your cells are no different. Years of poor diet and lifestyle (which results in chronic disease), and/or older age, wear down your system. Imagine the car with a 1,000-pound gorilla AND nasty oil that has not been changed in years!! Of course, the car is going to fall apart. When the oil is nasty and there is just too much stress on the system (from years of poor lifestyle and diet), there is one part of our system in particular that gets hit the hardest, the mitochondria. What are the mitochondria? They are little generators that produce electricity inside each cell. The mitochondria literally give us the energy of life. Without them, we would die within seconds. As noted in this article, YOUR WHITE BLOOD CELLS (immune cells) are ENERGY HUNGRY cells who are VERY DEPENDENT ON MITOCHONDRIA for energy. In fact, robust energy product is quite critical for your lymphocytes (the immune cells that attack viruses) to act quickly and kick the butt of viruses and other infections.

Imagine this. The enemy is coming. You call out the Marines to protect your body, except your Marines all have chronic fatigue, and they are just too damned tired to do much. So, the enemy just runs them over and invades. This is a huge oversimplification of what happens but it paints an accurate enough picture.

But mitochondria don’t just get worn down with aging. When we add to this the nasty oil (lack of glutathione), suddenly you see that you have a double or triple whammy! This may be part of the reason why some people get run over by COVID-19 and others are just fine. Guess what kids have! They have clean oil! They have ROBUST mitochondria! They have systems (including the white blood cells) that have NOT been run down by years and years of poor care…

With this scenario, you end up having white blood cells that are running on 70% capacity. It’s okay, but not great! Perhaps this 30% is what can make the difference! THE MOST AMAZING PART IS THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THIS!  YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THIS! We will discuss how in a little bit.

These and countless other studies all tell us the same thing. Your gut programs your BODY’S ENTIRE IMMUNE SYSTEM. Your immune system gets its instructions of how to behave and what to do to a significant extent from your gut!!!  If you have a healthy gastrointestinal tract with tons of healthy bacteria, you will have an immune system that is clear-headed, knows exactly what to, and which bad actors (COVID-19) to attack at exactly the right time. It also knows when to relax and peacefully chill out if there is no infection.

If your gut (and the bacteria within it) is screwed up from years of poor diet, stress, alcohol, etc., your Marines are getting all the wrong signals. Instead of being clear-headed and poised to attack the bad guys, you Marines are now all confused and not at all clear-headed. Imagine in the time that you need them the most, your Marines are drunk! These drunks sometimes even attack you (autoimmune disease) instead of the bad guys. An unhealthy gut is a recipe for disaster!!!

Now how does this all come together? This is the perfect combination to allow COVID-19 to run you over – poor fire-extinguishing, nasty oil to muck up the engine, along with the Marines who are drunk and confused and just too tired to do anything, even if they knew who to attack. This combination may be the reason why some people get hit by COVID-19 and fall apart, and others do just fine.

And this makes sense. Consider the main reason why so many poor people have died from this virus. The greatest risk from this virus is due to respiratory compromise, which basically means you are unable to breathe. Why does this happen? The virus gets into the body and causes such a mess in the air tubes, that the inflammation caused by the virus and the messy immune reaction causes the lungs to stop working and for breathing to become impossible. The Marines are too confused and tired, so COVID-19 sneaks right past them. This arsonist sets a fire, and since the fire extinguishing system is flawed, a little fire then becomes a massive forest fire – this forest fire is why these poor people have perished.

 

YOU HAVE THE POWER AND ABILITY TO CHANGE THIS!!! 

Why am I not worried for myself, my family or those in my practice? For years, we have been working to keep our guts healthy and to have optimal mitochondrial function AND glutathione levels (fire-extinguishing). The oil in our body is clean and energy production is high! The signals our Marines get are clear and decisive!

IF IT IS NOT COVID-19 TODAY, HOW ABOUT WHAT WILL COME TOMORROW? WILL YOU BE PREPARED? WILL YOUR BODY BE ABLE TO HANDLE A FUTURE ASSAULT THAT COMES?

YOU ARE NOT WEAK. YOU ARE NOT THIS PASSIVE, FRAIL THING THAT HAS NO POWER TO PROTECT TO YOURSELF.

YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF. Guns and ammo will not be able to protect you. You can’t shoot this virus, but you can have your Marines ready to act at any moment you need them. YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM IS HERE TO PROTECT YOU, if you are willing to do your job to keep it as healthy as possible.

I am not scared because I know my system is healthy and prepared. I am not scared for my wife, children or elders, because we are taking steps to make sure their fire-extinguishing systems are running at 100% and that their Marines are in tip-top shape and ready to kick butt if it ever becomes necessary. I have also done this for 99% of the children in my practice and their families. The 1% of the kids I am worried about in my practice, have already gone into isolation.

  • BOOZE: I love a good drink, but alcohol is literally a poison to your gut and mitochondria. It cripples your system, and right now is not the time you want to be gambling with a weakened immune system. Cut down or cut out alcohol.
  • TURMERIC: This yellow spice is perhaps the most potent anti-oxidant available to you, and it is probably sitting in your spice rack. Put some turmeric in your food every day and have this spice help your body become as healthy as possible.

  • PIZZA: I LOVE PIZZA! It is my favorite food in the world! It also messes me up royally. When I eat pizza, my entire system goes to hell, starting with my gut. As much as I LOVE this food, I rarely eat it because of what it does to me. Cut out or at least cut down on wheat (and all gluten-containing foods) and dairy (especially cow’s milk). There will be those of you who think this recommendation is crazy. Gluten and dairy both really do trigger a reaction within the gut which distorts the immune system, and ultimately create rather tremendous confusion in the minds of your Marines. In the last 10 years of working with the sickest of the sick patients, I can say that gluten and dairy are the two most common foods that can weaken the immune system. This is exactly what Dr. Wahls recommends as well. I know we may be facing shortages of food, so do what you can. For additional data and the science behind these recommendations, just go on the web.
  • BERRIES: Eat as many berries as you want (frozen or fresh). Berries are full of anti-oxidants and help boost glutathione and mitochondrial function.
  • MEAT: I love a good burger. Who doesn’t? Right? Despite this other love of mine, it is not great for me (or you!). Red meat is very hard to digest and ultimately taxes the gastrointestinal tract and can trigger inflammation, which can throw off the focus of your Marines. Excess amounts of animal protein also can distort the bacteria. In general, try to limit the amount of red meat you eat and limit animal protein to 2 small servings a day. Try to focus on eating fish, shrimp, chicken as the ideal proteins.
  • SOY AND CORN: To a lesser extent than gluten and dairy, soy and corn can also throw off your immune system. Try to reduce these foods if you can.
  • GRAINS: If you are feeling like eating grains, focus on eating gluten-free grains like rice, millet, buckwheat in moderation.
  • SWEET POTATOES: Unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes are a great option. Eat them in moderation.
  • OTHER FOODS: Dr. Wahls also recommends avoiding eggs and nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants). If you want to be hardcore, try to cut these foods out, but it is not critical for your purposes. My family and I still eat eggs!
  • BEANS: Beans may make you gassy, but can be a good source of fiber and protein. They do contain lectins which can trigger a gut reaction which can confuse the Marines. An easy way to eliminate this reaction is to pressure cook them. If you can do this, great! If not, don’t stress. Beans are still a great food for you!

      • 9-13 years: 12mg each day
      • 13-18 years: 15mg each day
      • Adults: 15-25mg each day
  • Multivitamin with B vitamins, magnesium and selenium: Until your diet is in perfect shape, a multi can help fill in holes in your nutritional state. Your mitochondria need abundant amounts of B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), and B5 (Pantothenic) to run efficiently. Magnesium is also a critical mineral to supercharge your entire system. Selenium in particularly helpful in boosting glutathione and your fire-extinguishing system. Make sure you have enough of these vitamin and mineral to help your Marines have the energy they need to mount a proper attack, including B vitamins. If you can find it, buy a multi that has “methyl-folate.” This is a better form of B9 for your body.
  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps “recycle” glutathione and ultimately helps boost your body’s ability to put out fires. Take a little bit of vitamin C each day.
    • years: 50mg each day
    • 4-8 years:        100mg each day
    • 9-13 years: 150mg each day
    • 13-18 years:    200mg each day
    • Adults: 250-500mg each day
  • Probiotics or Inulin (prebiotic): Inulin is a food that the good bacteria in the intestines love to chow down on. Until you become a vegetable eating machine, inulin and probiotics can be helpful to balance out the bacteria and send the right signal to your Marines. Try to purchase a probiotic that has at least 10 billion CFU (colony forming units). You want to take 1-2 grams of inulin. Other prebiotics are available as well, please follow the label directions.
  • CoQ10: CoQ10 is another critical “vitamin” to help your mitochondria crank out enough energy for your marines. If you are on a statin and keep getting muscle cramps, that’s because your mitochondria are hurting because of too little coQ10. If your energy is low and you have to drag yourself during the day, that’s because your mitochondria are not running well. If you have these symptoms or are of older age (>60 years), consider taking 100mg of CoQ10 a day.

Now during these crazy and strange times, with our society in upheaval and financial markets in turmoil, you may think it is impossible to stay calm! I totally get it. It is really hard to stay calm and control your stress during this awful period in our society!  At the same time, the science does NOT LIE. For the sake of our society, our neighbors, our families AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOUR OWN SELF (and your body’s immune system), it is important we stay calm. One very easy way to control your stress is to make sure you are getting enough sleep. Take this time to connect with friends and family (even if by computer or phone). We will get through this!

There will be those who believe that vaccines and medications are the only things that are “effective,” and they or others will be quick judge and dismiss these recommendations. There will be those who would prefer to stay in a state of fear and take no action, and that is absolutely fine. There will be those who feel they have no choice, and that is absolutely fine.

I am simply sharing what I know works for myself, my family and the hundreds of families I care for. I am simply sharing what has taken me over a decade of training to learn.

For so long this country has been so heavily divided. Remember, this virus does not care if you are White, Black, Asian, Christian, Jewish or Muslim. We are all equally affected. Now we can continue to be at war with one another, or perhaps find the strength to come together to fight this – to fight this together as one human race.

REMEMBER: YOU DON’T NEED TO LIVE IN A STATE OF FEAR. YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOU REALIZE. YOU HAVE CAPABLE MARINES WITHIN YOUR BODY WHO ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE TO FIGHT THIS VIRUS. GIVE YOUR BODY WHAT IT NEEDS, AND IT WILL PROTECT YOU. BECOME THE 80% WHO FIGHTS THIS VIRUS WITH EASE. LET’S TURN THIS 80% INTO 99% AND THEN FOCUS OUR ENERGY TO PROTECT THE 1% WHO ARE UNABLE TO FIGHT.
